As a creative freelance practitioner, English teacher, drama specialist & writer, I appreciate the power and beauty of language while also nurturing a sense of play & adventure during the creative workshops, drama sessions and projects I deliver.
With over twenty years classroom experience as an English Teacher, Head of Drama & ITT Subject Mentor - I am qualified and hugely passionate about empowering children and adults through creativity. Having also worked with LAMDA as an examiner, I can use my training to further inform my practice as I prepare young learners for a range of exams (or rather opportunities!) offered by LAMDA. Exam sessions are held regularly at a private centre in Powys which I run. I tailor tuition to the learner on an individual basis, from KS2 up to A level with English Language and English Literature studies.
By providing an encouraging, engaging format to develop confident inter-personnel skills, I strongly advocate that children can become better equipped for their future (and have great fun doing it!) I use a range of pedagogies to inform my practice: Critical Skills, Habits of Mind and more recently with ongoing study, the Writing and Thinking pedagogy as taught by Bard College IWT. My interest in how we learn, and the importance of keeping learning relevant (the 'why' part) has been a key part of my professional focus since I started teaching in 1996.
In October 2021 I was accepted onto the prestigious two-year Bard CLASP fellows program, with the support of Black Mountains College, Talgarth who I am a faculty associate with. This exciting pedagogy is already deepening and lifting my practice - how it dovetails too, into the new curriculum for Wales - encouraging metacognition / thinking and writing - is really so pertinent and inspiring too. I am making the most of this incredible opportunity. CLASP Fellows Program – CLASP Teaching Resources (bard.edu)
I also work collaboratively and recent and ongoing projects involve working in outdoor school spaces with a landscape designer (Emma Gardner) where we build up the skill-sets of young learners to develop and create their outdoor spaces while encouraging a love for the natural world at our fingertips- while learning how to dig, plant and grow!
I can provide creative and innovative approaches to themes and subject to suit classes with a range of learning styles. Having spent many years working with pastoral support I offer a safe, positive learning space to explore sensitive and important issues while being able to engage with care with the challenging conversations around, for example, climate change, anti-bullying.
I have a wide range of experience as a teacher and project manager and have been directly involved with many productions, bringing theatre and drama to a wider audience, and more recently, into the community.
Working the way I do, with young people and across the age ranges, it really is a privilege and I love what I do. I look forward to hearing from you with any query you may have!
Raven Drama develops confidence and communication skills, offering English tuition classes and preparation for LAMDA exams.
Raven Tuition provides online bespoke support for those in-school and home-schooled as well as for adult learners. Subjects offered: English Language, English Literature and Drama (KS2 up to A level). Study skills, exam technique and public speaking. I also work with those preparing for entry exams 11+ and 13+.
I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels of confidence. With over 20 years classroom teaching under my belt (12 as a head of department) I understand the importance of building a calm, enquiring and confident approach to studies. Learning should take place in a relaxed yet focused space, and this is an important element of my tuition which is offered online (Zoom / Skype).
Creative writing - and sharing ways-in and approaches - is a passion of mine and I also offer tuition with this, either one to one or with workshop style sessions.
I offer workshops on a one-off basis or over several weeks / sessions.
Workshops can have a range of foci, from creative writing to devising drama, from group work to individual. Indoor and outdoors across a range of settings. All workshops are delivered in a safely held and encouraging space with a focus on accessing learning while being relaxed and certainly not under pressure.
As a creative practitioner I have led and delivered a range of projects across mid and south Wales since 2016, as a part of the ACW initiative with Lead Creative Schools. Recent project-work involves collaborating with Emma Gardner (garden designer) and we work outdoors with young learners blending creative writing, drama, with creating outdoor spaces for the schools to then maintain and enjoy. Emma and I are always happy to offer a site-visit and discuss any ideas you may have, across a range of settings.
Fees vary depending on age / level of tuition. I tutor for young learners, as well as those preparing for A levels and the fees reflect this.
I can offer one-to-one tuition as well as tuition for small groups. Again, fees vary according to this.
Sessions can start at half an hour (ideal for younger learners, especially online) and incrementally increase up to two hours, depending on student requirements.
I try to be as flexible as possible and understand life can happen unexpectedly – my T&Cs try to reflect the need for some flexibility, for both parties.
